As a lifelong resident of Saint Joseph, I can honestly say that G And M is an absolute institution in our town. The tag line for G and M should be “If We Don’t Have It, You Don’t need It.” Inside you will find penny candy, vintage candies and gums, a curated root beer selection, office and school supplies, toys, puzzles, hardware, cleaning supplies, sewing notions, canning jars, clothing, footwear and so much more. One of my favorites is they still carry plastic model kits and Testors paints and the balsa airplanes that I grew up flying. I often say that the only thing that has changed about G and M in the last 50+ years is that they don’t charge a dime to use the bathroom anymore, they just don’t offer a public restroom. The aisles are slightly crowded and claustrophobic, but that is how they pack it all in. The staff is friendly and they know where everything g is. One of my favorite parts of G and M is the old Maple floors that are slightly uneven and creak and groan a bit under foot.

A great spot to checkout if you happen to be downtown St. Joe. A mixture of everything to say the least. They carry souvenirs, post cards, unique cards, car decals, old school candy including any flavor Taffy you want, board game, puzzles, a myriad of kids toys, socks, shoes, wind chimes, Lakeside items, and so much more. Don't forget the one cent pony ride that's available for kids to ride.

Every December my husband and I make a little pilgrimage to the G & M Variety in St. Joseph, Michigan. It is a mainstay of the charming downtown retail district and my mother shopped there as a little girl in the 1940s. It did not go by the same name but for all intents and purposes, her experience as a child and mine as an adult are the same: the same creaky wooden floors, the same scent of candy and birdseed and Evening in Paris cologne. The doors are the ones she and her mother passed through, looking for that special Christmas present that would cost literal pocket change. Today, as I wandered the colorful aisles, looking for things to delight our 4 adult boys, I know I had the same look of wonder and excitement on my face, so very like my mom's. If you are looking for a bright spot amidst the darkness of this winter world, I recommend a stop at G & M Variety in St. Joe. It will lift your spirits and take you back to simpler times.
